The Roland Virtual Sound Canvas by Roland is a powerful live performance tool that allows sound engineers to perform virtual rehearsals with real hardware. Superior sound quality, professional quality presets, and easy collaboration make the VSC a must-have for any serious musician or studio engineer. In this article we cover all of the important features of the VSC and give a rundown of what you need to set up your project. We'll also give you a list of resources for performing with an external keyboard and speaker setup. Setting Up The VSC is a "hardware in a box." It requires an interface, software, and a computer. The interface is a piece of hardware that connects the VSC to the computer via USB cable. The software allows you to load in presets and remotely control the hardware settings via your computer. The computer will play audio from your DAW or music software while using the VSC. Roland recommends using their VS-880 Virtual Sound Canvas interface with this product. The VS-880 sports 8 inputs and 8 outputs for connecting with instruments and microphones. No special drivers are required to use the VS-880 with Windows XP or 2000 computers. Connecting a microphone is a snap with the built in mic/line connector, which also doubles as a headphone jack for monitoring. Here is a list of Roland's recommended software to use multi-track recording with the VSC: Studio Drummer 2, Cubase, Pro Tools 7+, Live 8.0.3, Acid Music Software Player, ReLive DXi or ReLive XS. Studio Drummer 2 and Acid Music Software Player come included with each VSC unit. The other programs will be available from our download page. Using the VSC The VSC does not have any dedicated inputs or outputs, so you will have to use one of the six outputs to connect your multi-track recorder. A multichannel MIDI controller is required for remote recording on the VSC. A Roland VS-737 is recommended for this purpose. Another option is to use an input on the VS-880 to record directly into Cubase or Cubase AI4. There are three basic inputs that are required for using the VSC with a microphone: MIC/L, MIC/R, and MONO MIC. The MONO MIC input is for connecting your instrument with a DI box. The Virtual Sound Canvas offers the ability to create 128 presets per VSC-enabled library or 512 per library when used with Roland 's VS-8000. Each preset is loaded into the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and can be selected via a switch or function button located on the front panel of the amplifier. You can also remotely control any MIDI functions of the VSC via its MIDI I/O, even volume and panning! Using an external device without a microphone input means that no audio will be output from your VSC.
